Only one female speaker took the stage at Apple’s big event.

Successfully unveiling the new iPhone X wasn’t the only thing Apple failed at on Tuesday. The company’s iPhone announcement featured only one female presenter – Senior Vice President of Retail Angela Ahrendts, who spoke for just six minutes – with the remainder of the two-hour event filled with male speakers.

Various media outlets noted that it was discouraging to see Apple not make a stronger effort to include more women — particularly in light of the huge amount of attention Silicon Valley’s severe lack of gender diversity has received over the past year.

Between the allegations of sexism at Uber in February, the anti-diversity “manifesto” written by a since-fired Google employee in August and a recent viral story about how two female entrepreneurs had to make up a male co-founder to get their emails answered, the tech industry – which often touts itself as a haven of progressiveness – has been forced to confront its own failures in combatting sexism.

In 2015, Apple CEO Tim Cook told Mashable that the lack of women in tech was the fault of the entire tech community and that more female role models are needed in order to inspire women to pursue careers in the field.

“Mostly it’s a way of thinking,” Cook said. “And so if you believe as we believe that diversity leads to better products and we’re all about making products that enrich people’s lives, then you obviously put a ton of energy behind diversity the same way you would put a ton of energy behind anything else that is truly important.”

Only 32 percent of Apple employees are female, as of June 2016, with just 23 percent of employees in the company’s tech division being women. In fact, only a handful of women have ever taken the stage at a major Apple event, according to Gizmodo.

During Apple’s WWDC keynote in June, Mic reported that women received just seven percent of speaking time, which was worse than the event’s previous two years.
