Congressman grills FBI director on anti-Trump sentiment at agency.

A Republican congressman ran through a list of top FBI officials and asked bureau director Christopher Wray whether any of them have expressed sentiments to him against President Trump. Rep. Rep. Louie Gohmert, questioning Wray during a House Judiciary Committee meeting on Thursday, said his predecessor James Comey had “weakened the agency” because of his bungling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server and raised concerns about FBI agent Peter Strzok.

Special counsel Robert Mueller, investing Russian meddling in the 2016 election, reassigned Strzok over the summer after it was revealed that he sent anti-Trump texts while he was part of the FBI team probing Clinton’s emails last year.

Are you aware of any “senior FBI executives” speaking against this administration? Gohmert asked.

“I’m not aware of any senior FBI executives who are allowing improper political considerations to affect their work with me right now,” Wray responded.

Then the Texas lawmaker began reading off names, including Carl Ghattas.

“My experience with executive assistant director Ghattas has been very positive and he’s been a complete professional in all of my interactions with him,” the FBI head said.

Ghomert ticked off several more names – one of whom Wray said he didn’t know.

“No,” he told Gohmert after each one was read.

“It’s important that we have fair mined people – there’s never been a requirement that anybody not be able to vote or have political beliefs – just they not let them affect their outlook,” Ghomert said.

The committee members grilled Wray on whether the FBI used a double standard and gave Clinton “special treatment” during the email probe as compared to the investigation into possible collusion by Trump campaign associates with the Russians during the election.

Wray declined to go into details of the Clinton investigation, saying it was now part of an independent probe by the Justice Department’s inspector general.

“These matters are being looked at as they should be,” he said. “When those findings come to me I’ll take the appropriate action necessary.”

Wray also defended the agency from Trump’s comments over the weekend that Comey, whom he fired in May, had left the bureau “in tatters.”

“What I can tell you is that the FBI that I see is tens of thousands of agents and analysts and staff working their tails off to keep Americans safe,” Wray told lawmakers, praising them as “decent people committed to the highest principles of integrity and professionalism and respect.”

Trump attacked the agency in a Tweet on Saturday, a day after his former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russian officials.

Flynn, who Trump fired in February, is also cooperating in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the election and any collusion by campaign associates.

“After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters — worst in History! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness,” Trump tweeted, referring to James Comey, the former FBI director.
