Supermarket yanks coffee cans with slave imagery.

A UK supermarket sold coffee tins that depict slaves working on plantations — and quickly removed them from its shelves after an outcry from outraged customers, according to a report. Shopper Patriic Gayle, 56, and friend Annette Saunders were browsing the isles at the Waitrose store inside the Brunswick Centre in Bloomsbury, Camden, when they spotted the offensive illustrations on tins sold by Italian coffee company Saquella 1856, Gayle told Metro UK.

The images show black slaves harvesting beans in Guatemala — and one image depicts a white plantation manager watching a black mother carrying a child. Gayle quickly approached staff to demand that that the tins be removed from the store.

“It looks like the kind of thing you see at Christmas but when I looked closer, I was horrified,” he told the outlet.

Gayle and Saunders returned to the shop repeatedly to voice their concerns — and local politicians even got involved.

“I’m a white, gay man, and Annette’s daughter is mixed-race, so it was particularly poignant for Annette,” Gayle told the outlet. ‘It was a bit of a no-brainer. Anybody would object.”

The items were taken off the shelves within a week — and Gayle praised the store’s staff for their quick response.

‘The staff were not the problem, the problem is higher up and an unwillingness to take stock off the shop floor,” he said. “‘Somebody has designed this and thought it was OK. Did anybody stop to think what this picture was of?”

In a statement obtained by the outlet, a supermarket spokesman apologized for “any offense caused by the images that were shown on these products.”

“We’ve spoken to the supplier who has explained that the images were intended to depict how coffee was historically harvested and traded,” he said. “However, we fully understand how these could be interpreted and removed both products from sale in December until the supplier has had the opportunity to redesign the packaging.”

In a statement Saquella 1856 issued to Metro, the coffee company also apologized “to anyone that was offended by the images.”

“As a Fairtrade accredited and EFSIS ethical standard approved business, we were shocked to learn they had been interpreted in this way and the products were removed from sale in December,” the statement said.
