Death toll rises in wake of Irma’s devastation.

The death toll from Hurricane Irma in the continental United States has climbed to 22 – while evacuees were returning early Wednesday to the storm-ravaged Florida Keys, according to reports. By Tuesday night, Monroe County officials announced that all 42 bridges linking the islands in the archipelago had been inspected and “deemed safe for vehicles,” ABC News reported.

Meanwhile, Florida Power & Light Co. had restored power late Tuesday to 2.3 million customers, which was 40 percent of those affected across the state.

But about 4.4 million customers in Florida were still without power as of Tuesday afternoon.

The company said its east coast customers should expect most power to be restored by Sunday. Those on the west coast should expect most electricity to be restored by Sept. 22.

The low-lying Keys had been cut off from the mainland after Irma made landfall early Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane, bringing 130 mph winds and a storm surge of 10 feet.

Gov. Rick Scott said the storm left “devastation” on the Keys, which were under mandatory evacuation orders during Irma.

President Trump announced that he is set to travel to the Sunshine State on Thursday.

“I will be traveling to Florida tomorrow to meet with our great Coast Guard, FEMA and many of the brave first responders & others,” the president tweeted Wednesday morning.

At sunrise Wednesday, Keys residents faced the devastation left behind by Irma.

“I don’t have a house. I don’t have a job. I have nothing,” said Mercedes Lopez, 50, whose family fled north from the Keys town of Marathon on Friday and stayed at an Orlando hotel, Reuters reported.

Their home was destroyed, along with the gas station where she had worked.

“We came here, leaving everything at home, and we go back to nothing,” Lopez said.

Three people died in Marathon during the storm, City Manager Chuck Lindsay told flkeys.com.

Initial damage assessments found 25 percent of homes in the Keys were destroyed and 65 percent sustained major damage, Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Brock Long has said.

The extent of the devastation took many of the first returnees by surprise.

“I expected some fence lines to be down and some debris,” said Orlando Morejon, 51, a surgeon, as he hacked away at a tree blocking his Islamorada driveway. “We were not expecting to find someone else’s sailboat in our backyard.”
