Binge drinking can give your skin a hangover.

Binge drinking this Christmas is likely to do more than make you feel terrible – it can trigger a “skin hangover” that can last up to four weeks. That’s right, even once your throbbing headache and sick feeling disappear, your skin is left red, puffy and you’ll have dark circles under your eyes. And the...

That’s right, even once your throbbing headache and sick feeling disappear, your skin is left red, puffy and you’ll have dark circles under your eyes.

And the dehydration caused by boozing accentuates your fine lines and wrinkles on your forehead, chin and lips.

You’re also likely to notice broken blood vessels around the cheeks and nose and your skin will sag around your cheeks and jaw.

A big night out isn’t such an appealing invite now, is it?

And depending on your age the effects can last well into January.

Experts from CACI International, a non-surgical anti-aging facial treatment, have looked at how booze affects your skin and calculated how long the toxicity of alcohol left over from a heavy night can last.

In women over 40 the effects of your favorite tipple can last up to four weeks but for younger women in their 20s their skin tends to bounce back faster.

Even still, the aging effects of drinking can last up to a fortnight for women in their 20s and 30s.

Men draw the lucky straw, their skin recovers faster typically within a week.

This is down to the fact that their body processes alcohol better.

Dean Nathanson, CACI chief executive, said: “The effects of Christmas party binge drinking on the skin last much longer than the immediate hangover.

“Consumption of over 14 units of alcohol in one night will take a 40-year-old woman’s skin nearly a month to recover fully from and if she goes out a few times over the festive season it will only get worse.

“The toxic effect of the alcohol and sugar remain in the skin long after the hangover feeling has subsided.

“We are not saying don’t go out and enjoy yourself but it is important to take preventative measures to protect your skin and we feel the need to raise awareness that repeated alcohol binge drinking can have long-term detrimental effects on the skin.”

The NHS recommends that nobody, regardless of their sex, drinks more than 14 units of alcohol each week.

That is the equivalent of six pints, ten small glasses of wine or seven double gin and tonics.

But who hasn’t drunk more than that at a Christmas party?

CACI therapists also said a skin hangover is made worse by smoking and wearing heavy make-up to cover up the damage.

Thankfully there are a few steps you can take to help your skin recover from a boozy night out, Dean said.

Prevention is obviously better than a cure, so if you can, limit the amount you drink.

But that’s not always easy, especially during the party season, so opt drinks low in sugar and calories like a vodka, lime and soda.

Always make sure you drink a pint of water before you go out and another when you get home.

In the morning you should use a moisturizer rich in anti-oxidants underneath your make-up – and opt for lighter coverage as make-up can be drying on the skin.

You should also make sure you have a decent eye cream to address any dehydration around your crows feet.

Avoid puffing on ciggs during the evening – that means social smokers too.

And, no matter how tempting it is to crawl straight into bed when you get home, make sure you remove all of your make-up before going to sleep.
