Immigrants’ kids are ditching their Americanized names.

David Brown has never felt a connection to his own name. “To me, Brown means nothing,” said the 49-year-old finance professional, who lives in Manhattan. “There is no heritage, there is no Jewishness. There is nothing.” So, in June, Brown began legal proceedings to change his last name to Broner — the original surname of...

“To me, Brown means nothing,” said the 49-year-old finance professional, who lives in Manhattan. “There is no heritage, there is no Jewishness. There is nothing.”

So, in June, Brown began legal proceedings to change his last name to Broner — the original surname of his late father, Nechemia — as a way to pay homage to the family’s ancestry. Broner, a Holocaust survivor from Poland, changed his name to Charles Brown after arriving in New York in 1950, seeking acceptance from Americans.

David’s children Jonathan, 12, Sarah, 10, and Isabella, 8, will also have their last names changed to Broner. (His wife, Maria Gonzalez-Manes, 52, uses her maiden name.)

Waves of 19th- and 20th-century immigration brought millions of new Americans through Ellis Island — many of whom, in an effort to assimilate into new communities and professions, changed their names to ones that sounded more American. Now, in an about-face, more and more of those immigrants’ descendants are reverting back to their original surnames to show ancestral pride.

Among them is Stefan Soloviev — né Solow, a name that is visible all over Manhattan thanks to his family’s real-estate development projects that, per 2017 tallies, span an at-least 3.8-million-square-foot portfolio of residential and office buildings. But the 43-year-old scion, who has recently taken on a larger role in the company, uses the clan’s pre-Ellis Island moniker.

(Soloviev, through a representative, did not respond to requests for comment.)

Eric Lifschitz was at the forefront of the trend, and says life has felt sweeter, and more meaningful, since he did it.

‘I didn’t like the idea that I was hiding my name behind a false [name]’

“It immediately felt like an authentic representation of myself and connected me to a much larger part of my heritage,” said Lifschitz, 46, the founder of the LEDA law firm, which specializes in tenant law, and board president of the Eviction Defense Collaborative.

He was born Eric Lipton — a family name that dates back to 1949, when his now-late uncle, a Detroit journalist, believed he couldn’t land front-page stories as a Lifschitz. The inspiration for Eric to change his last name came in the late ’90s during a trip to Israel, where he met a cousin who was the sole member of his extended family still bearing the moniker.

“I didn’t like the idea that I was hiding my name behind a false [name],” said Lifschitz, who grew up in Detroit and now lives in San Francisco. So, in 1998, he made the legal name change just before starting law school. His father, William Lipton, now 89, initially voiced skepticism over the decision and was concerned about the potential for anti-Semitic comments or actions.

Eric Lifschitz

But Eric hasn’t faced any discrimination — and is quick to point out he snagged a job at a corporate law firm right after school.

His dad has also come around and is proud of his son’s move.

“My father always refers to me as Eric Lifschitz … he loves to say my name,” he said.

But it’s not only the children of Jewish immigrants — and it’s not only last names.

Giovanni Celentano, a 46-year-old actor from Long Beach, LI, was born Johnny, but legally changed his first name roughly two years ago to feel more connected to his roots.

“I’m very proud of being an Italian American and I wanted to pay homage,” said Celentano.

His parents had planned to name him Giovanni, which was the name of his father; but at the last minute his mother settled on Johnny because it sounded more American.

Celentano opted to change his name after losing his father to cancer in 2012.

“When someone says my name, I think of my father immediately,” he said. “It comes with such a sense of pride and it’s such a musical-sounding name. I get hardcore respect that a guy named Ryan Smith maybe wouldn’t.”
