China’s swine fever outbreak won’t harm your bacon habit.

China’s piggies are in peril, which could spell bad news for that country’s dinner plates. Around 40,000 swine have now been culled from the nation’s herds in a far-reaching effort to stop the spread of African swine fever, a highly contagious viral disease that kills domesticated pigs within days of infection and has no vaccine or cure.

In China’s 14th outbreak since the beginning of August, 63 swine in Anhui province were discovered to be infected this week, according to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The virus has wiped out nearly 1,000 pigs in the same period.

The porky pandemic is so serious that Chinese authorities are now offering farmers a barnyard bounty of about $117 per infected pig, according to the Washington Post.

While the containment efforts could ultimately lead to a Chinese pork shortage, experts say there’s no safety-related reason to scrap your bucket-list trip to Beijing: You can’t catch this virus, even if you somehow scarf down a plate of contaminated pork.

“While this disease is highly contagious, it’s pig to pig only,” Dr. Stephen S. Morse, a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, tells The Post. “Humans aren’t at risk for African swine fever.”

And while pigs can be infected by tainted animal byproducts in their feed, that risk doesn’t apply to people. “I’m not worried about eating a BLT,” Dr. Morse says when asked if travelers should avoid pork just to be safe. “I’m worried about what happens when you throw it out and a pig gets it.”

For bacon lovers here in the States, there’s an even lower chance of exposure. Although China is world’s largest pork producer, most of its meat is consumed domestically.
