The ‘collusion’ quest is over, Cuomo’s new frenemy & other comments.

GOP strategist: Mueller’s Quest for Collusion Is Over Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation hasn’t found any Trump-Russia election collusion, maintains Ed Rogers at The Washington Post, “and Democrats and their allies in the liberal mainstream media know that it never will.” Which is why the president’s “clearer-thinking foes” are “transitioning to an obstruction of justice...

Last US News - Opinion: The ‘collusion’ quest is over, Cuomo’s new frenemy & other comments. NY Post 24 - US News

Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation hasn’t found any Trump-Russia election collusion, maintains Ed Rogers at The Washington Post, “and Democrats and their allies in the liberal mainstream media know that it never will.” Which is why the president’s “clearer-thinking foes” are “transitioning to an obstruction of justice claim,” based on the notion that his firing of FBI Director James Comey “was a criminal act.” But they’re entering a “mind-numbing legal netherworld” in which they suggest the president “committed a legal act with a corrupt mindset and should therefore be impeached.” Question is, will enough voters realize that the Dems’ bid to turn the 2018 midterms into a referendum on impeachment is merely “a desperate shriek that keeps them from having to defend their lurch to the left”?

Political scribes: Cuomo Murphy’s Delicate Dance

In their first joint press conference, report Politico’s Dana Rubinstein and Ryan Hutchins, Gov. Cuomo and incoming New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy displayed “a chumminess that bordered on hokey.” But the “precarious reality” is that as Cuomo “tacks left” in preparation for a presidential bid, he finds an unabashed progressive Democrat ascending in his own backyard “with none of the baggage Cuomo carries from his seven years as a triangulating Democrat.” There’s also “the state of the region’s infrastructure and the limited pool of money available to address it.” Murphy threatens “to stymie Cuomo’s own Port Authority projects” unless he quits trying to undermine a new bus terminal. Predicts former top PA official David Wildstein: “They’re gonna kill each other.”

Foreign desk: Russia Olympic Ban Is Clever Sanction

Bloomberg’s Leonid Bershidsky suggests the just-announced ban on the Russian Olympic Committee from the upcoming Winter Games is “an effective format for sanctions” against Vladimir Putin: “It strikes a difficult balance between hurting the regime and not punishing Russians themselves” while also forcing the regime “to show domestically whether it cares more about itself or the Russian people.” The International Olympic Committee banned Russia’s “tarnished institutions” but not its athletes, who can compete under the Olympic flag. But “they will be competing as ‘Olympic athletes from Russia’ — that is, as Russians.” And nothing “stops them from draping themselves in the Russian flag after winning.” What Russia loses is any official “claim to ownership” of the athletes, who will “compete for their country, not for the regime that failed them by being unable to root out a doping conspiracy.” Music critic: Can the Met Survive the Levine Scandal?

His crimes may remain “alleged,” says Justin Davidson at Vulture, but the career of conductor James Levine, the 74-year-old “high priest of the Metropolitan Opera’s pit,” has “clearly ended.” And the “principal victims” are the now-grown men who say he repeatedly molested them as teens, along with “those who may soon do the same, and others who never will.” But not everyone can claim ignorance: Levine “has been protected by an elaborate apparatus centered at the Metropolitan Opera,” which for decades “was essentially the Levine Company,” its identity “intertwined with his.” So Davidson is “not sure the Met can survive Levine’s disgrace” — because “with a crushing overhead and too many seats to sell every night, the company survives on a diminishing diet of goodwill.” From the right: NFL’s $100 Million Political Stunt

The National Football League, beleaguered by the National Anthem protests that have dwindled attendance and lowered TV ratings, has just “doubled down on liberal politics,” contends Amanda Head at Fox News. League officials have proposed to partner with the Players Coalition and donate $100 million to “causes important to African-American communities.” In fact, she says, this is really nothing more “than a political stunt designed to score brownie points with the mainstream media.” And it’s not about funding “social causes” or “racial equality” but a case of the league “caving to left-wing activists” in hopes of ending their protests. The NFL, she suggests, “would be better off appeasing its loyal fans [rather] than liberal activists.” — Compiled by Eric Fettmann
