Claudia Rosett at PJ Media urges “a sober rethink of the applause we’re now hearing for North Korea’s last-minute enrollment in the Winter Olympic Games” being held next month in South Korea. And never mind that it followed the resumption of inter-Korean talks and the White House statement saying it provides “an opportunity for the regime to see the value of ending its international isolation by denuclearizing.” That’s just “wishful thinking translated into diplomatic nonsense.” All Kim Jong-Un has learned is that his “threats, gross abuses of human rights and illicit nuclear missile ventures are no serious bar to rejoining the ‘international community.’ ” So “doing backflips in response” to his last-minute overture “is not a step toward peace.”

Law professor: No Need To Change Libel Laws

President Trump already has “ample ability to sue” if he believes Michael Wolff’s new tell-all contains false or misleading statements, contends Jonathan Turley at USA Today. There’s no need for the “very strong look” he’s threatening to take at those laws — and, “fortunately, there is little” he can do to alter them. Fact is, it’s “relatively easy for most people to litigate defamation.” Public figures like Trump face a higher, though not impossible, standard because of the need to “balance the importance of free speech against the need to deter false statements.” Yes, says Turley, “one can certainly understand the frustration of politicians being hammered in such one-sided accounts” as Wolff’s book.” But reducing the standard “would produce sweeping and dangerous changes to our political system.” Culture critic: It’s Not Mark Wahlberg’s Fault

Hollywood “is outraged” that Mark Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million to reshoot scenes for “All the Money in the World” after accused molester Kevin Spacey was replaced, while co-star Michelle Williams got only about $1,000 for the same extra 10 days of work. Unfortunately, says Mary Katharine Ham at The Federalist, Williams “agreed to work for a pittance” and be a “team player” in order to help the film succeed. Wahlberg, on the other hand, made the decision Williams could have, as well: Make their “employers pay for the mistake they made casting Spacey.” Simple fact: “If you want to be paid for your job, you need to insist on being paid for your job.” Yes, “being tough in negotiations is harder for women” in sexist Hollywood, “but why make it easy for them?” Consumer writer: Seattle Soda Tax Is Fizzling Out

New Year’s Day brought sticker shock across the city of Seattle, reports Guy Bentley at the Washington Examiner, as residents found the local $1.75-an-ounce tax on sweetened beverages has send “the price of soda skyrocketing.” Example: “The price of a Gatorade Frost Variety Pack at Costco, which usually cost $15.99, jumped to $26.33.” The tax is meant to cut soda consumption and therefore obesity. Yet soda consumption nationwide already is at a 31-year low. Consumers “have access to a plethora of diet and other sugar-free drinks which are increasingly popular.” Besides, similar taxes elsewhere have only led to increased sales for non-soda sugared drinks as well as beer. Moreover, “there is no evidence from anywhere in the world that soda taxes have any impact on obesity, let alone broader health outcomes.” From the right: Mr. President, Put Up That Wall

President Trump likely “has never even tried practicing humility,” a fact with which The American Spectator’s R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. sympathizes. In fact, Trump “has every reason to be rather high on himself,” given his first-year accomplishments. Now he “wants to make good on his promise to build a wall across on our southern border to keep out the jihadists, the drug gangs and the illegal aliens” as part of his overall immigration policy. Before he took office, “illegal immigrants were overwhelming our southern border.” Yet now, “even without a wall, the number of illegals has declined,” because “they know that Donald keeps his promises.” — Compiled by Eric Fettmann
