Sister Kim’s not-so-warm message, Hillary needs to move on and other comments.

From the right: Kim Yo-Jong’s Not-So-‘Warm’ Message As part of what CNN declared “a gold-medal-winning diplomatic performance,” at the Olympics, Kim Yo-Jong, sister of North Korea’s leader, left what the network termed a “warm message” in the South Korean president’s guestbook. Which Ethan Epstein at The Weekly Standard considers an interesting way to describe “a...

Science beat: Why We’re Still So Unprepared for the Flu Not only are we “unprepared for the next pandemic flu, though experts warn it’s only a matter of time before a new strain capable of killing millions will emerge,” warns Bloomberg’s Faye Flam, even this year’s season flu caught us by surprise. Yet there’s still no rush towards “development of a so-called universal flu vaccine — one that would protect against any of flu’s many strains.” People are getting “burned out” by predictions of so many impending health disasters. Besides, “nobody is willing to suggest some less urgent health threat where funding can be cut.” Sure, a universal flu vaccine would be lifesaving, but no one will suggest it be funded by cutting “from research into Ebola, obesity, cancer or AIDS.”

Culture critic: Why Can’t Hillary Move On? Joanna Weiss at Politico says it made sense that, after losing the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton “spent some time wallowing in the past, howling at the universe with a side of Chardonnay.” But 15 months later, amid all the “gnashing and rehashing” of the campaign, she still can’t break free. True, neither has President Trump, “but Clinton hasn’t dropped it, either. And at this point, she should.” Al Gore and Mitt Romney managed to “move on — or at least make it look like they have — and reinvent.” And “this is what many of Clinton’s critics want for her: Not to be silent, but to say something different.” Fact is, “she’s missing an opportunity to define herself beyond being the candidate who — fairly, unfairly or both — lost a seemingly winnable election to Trump.”

Conservative: Nunes and Schiff Both Must Go Neither of the two Californians heading the House Intelligence Committee — Republican Devin Nunes and Democrat Adam Schiff — “seem particularly intelligent,” laments T. Becket Adams at the Washington Examiner. “Quite the opposite, actually”: They’re “prone to hyper-partisan hysteria, which means they’re constantly embarrassing themselves on national television with easily debunked allegations.” Moreover, “their partisan tilts and their relentless backbiting have become distractions from the very things they’re supposed to be investigating.” Both men “should step down” in favor of “committee chairs who will treat the job with the seriousness it deserves.” That “would save their respective parties any future embarrassment, and it’d be good for the republic as a whole.”

Foreign desk: About Israel’s African-Migrant Crisis Israel is taking a media beating over its decision to deport thousands of African migrants, with inevitable comparisons to the Holocaust. But Tablet’s Liel Leibovitz says “the Sudanese and Eritrean migrants struggling to stay in Israel aren’t Anne Frank, and the Israeli government isn’t the Gestapo,” calling such thinking “morally unserious [amd] intellectually dishonest.” The migrants consist “solely of individuals” — mostly single young men — “who have crossed the Egyptian border into Israel without permits” And appear to have come “simply to find better work” rather than political freedom. Once deported to Rwanda or Uganda, many “then leave again in the hope of making it to Europe or somewhere else where economic opportunities are plentiful.” In fact, this is “a more jagged version of the very same conversation Americans are having when they talk about immigration.”
