America and her allies still have work to do in Syria.

Friday night’s US-UK-France airstrikes in Syria did their job, putting Syrian butcher Bashar al-Assad on notice that he’ll pay a heavy price for use of chemical weapons. But the allies’ job isn’t done: Assad and his Iranian and Russian backers must still be stopped from crushing the forces that defeated ISIS. The 105 missiles took...

The 105 missiles took out three Syrian chem research-and-production sites with no damage to Russian forces in Syria — thereby avoiding the risk of retaliation from Moscow. US Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie said the operation would “set the Syrian chemical-weapons program back by years.”

Russia, Iran and Assad’s regime all denounced the strikes as criminal, which is rich coming from an alliance that has regularly targeted hospitals and schools while engaging in mass torture and rape.

The Kremlin is also busy with a Big Lie effort to deny that Assad used chems against the rebels, sometimes insisting the attack was faked, sometimes blaming the White Helmets, a Free Syrian relief group and sometimes fingering the Brits — whom it has also blamed for last month’s Russian chemical-weapon assassination attempt on UK soil.

Meanwhile, the Free Syrian troops key to destroying ISIS now stand as Assad & Co.’s next targets. The West not only has a moral duty to protect its allies, it faces the strategic imperative to prevent Iran from gaining hegemony over the entire northern Middle East, an arc from Lebanon through all of Syria into Iraq.

Preserving that pocket of freedom doesn’t require a major Western ground presence, but it does require the will to declare Syria east of the Euphrates a no-fly zone — just as the victors in the First Gulf War did for Iraqi Kurdistan.

Assad is going to keep testing the West. The best way to ensure he has no good options is to draw a line that doesn’t directly threaten Moscow’s interests in Syria, while protecting those of Washington and its allies.

President Barack Obama’s failure to draw a real red line for Assad, and his appeasement of Iran and Russia, left America’s enemies on a roll. Fully reversing the tide will take a lot more than one night’s good work.
