Charles Pierce sees some parallels between James Comey and former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover on the lurid tales of the Steele dossier. Writing at Esquire, Pierce reminds readers that Hoover essentially blackmailed President John F. Kennedy to keep his job by making sure JFK was aware Hoover had recordings implicating Kennedy in his various affairs — echoes of which Pierce hears in Comey’s description of the dossier’s more compromising allegations. “Comey couldn’t possibly have had an ulterior motive in informing the president about what he knew about this episode, a motive having something to do with, you know, self-preservation in the job from which the president fired him anyway,” Pierce writes sarcastically. He adds: “I don’t trust anybody in this tangled catastrophe.”

Foreign desk: Why Leftists Take Hamas’s Side in Gaza

One reason the left is outraged at Israel repelling attempted mass infiltration from Gaza — the recent so-called “March of Return” protests — is that they are repulsed by the very idea of national borders, suggests Liel Liebovitz at Tablet: “If, like me and like most Israelis, you believe that humanity could hardly do better than to arrange itself by nation state, you shouldn’t have much difficulty understanding why a border is among the key emblems of national sovereignty.” If you believe borders are anachronistic, however, and “if nationalism strikes you as useless and frightening,” why not simply “open wide the gate and let the wide world in?” Such a conflict can’t be resolved, Liebovitz writes, “because the disagreement here is ontological, not political.”

Culture file: The Humanity of Andre the Giant

Unlike most wrestlers, Andre the Giant couldn’t blend in when the action was over. He was an “attraction” both in and out of the ring, notes Kyle Smith in his review of HBO’s new documentary on Andre Roussimoff. “He was an oddity too big to ignore, and even people who didn’t know about his career play-acting violence inside the wrestling ring approached him as you would a fantastic creature,” Smith writes at National Review. “Friends, too, dehumanized him. One writer in the documentary compares his hands to a lowland gorilla’s.” Yet the movie still manages to find “the humanity in this superficially bestial figure.” He punished not those he saw as weak targets but those who were poor colleagues and needed to be put in their place: “André maintained civility by using real brutality.”

Political scribe: Why Ex-Trump Aides Can’t Get Jobs

The Russia investigation is having an unintended effect on outsiders, reports Tarini Parti at BuzzFeed: “The dark cloud of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe hanging over the administration has made those in the private sector wary of doing any hiring from Trump world.” Normally DC firms are happy to hire ex-White House aides. But former Trump staffers are getting the cold shoulder. And it’s not just about Russia: “Companies are also associating staffers, especially those who came from the campaign and don’t have much other experience, with anti-immigrant, anti–free trade views because of what the president has said and the policies he has enacted,” sources told Parti. The reverse is true as well: Republicans who would normally jump at the chance to work for a president “are turning down opportunities to work in the administration.”

Legal file: Comey Media Blitz Throws Mueller a Curveball

James Comey’s gossip tell-all is selling well and filling his talk-show dance card, but his decision to cash in could hamper the Russia investigation initiated after his dismissal, writes Darren Samuelsohn at Politico. The book “represents an official statement on key parts of the federal Russia probe.” As such, legal experts tell Samuelsohn, it “could complicate court proceedings or a Congressional impeachment debate triggered by Mueller’s findings.” It’s incredibly risky when a witness makes lots of public statements during the investigation, and in Comey’s case the media tour will “expose him to the watchful eye of Trump allies and defense lawyers ready to exploit any inconsistencies in his accounts to their clients’ benefit.” Other such figures have passed on the payday until a more appropriate time to release their memoirs — Ollie North, Monica Lewinsky and John Dean, to name a few.
