The retreat of US leadership and other comments.

Foreign desk: World Trouble Spots Need US Leadership Global order is rapidly disintegrating thanks to “the retreat of American leadership” — with “the bloody mess that is Syria” as Exhibit A, charges Jackson Diehl in The Washington Post. Global order is rapidly disintegrating thanks to “the retreat of American leadership” — with “the bloody mess that is Syria” as Exhibit A, charges Jackson Diehl in The Washington Post. Fact is, “in multiple miserable corners of the world, where US envoys and aid would normally be helping victims, deterring malevolent actors and seeking political solutions, there is a void.” Other examples: Venezuela, whose “political and economic implosion” has led to “the largest displacement of people in Latin American history”; South Sudan, “on the brink of famine” thanks to a five-year-old civil war; Burma, whose ongoing ethnic cleansing has been met with only an “anemic” reaction. The only US official who’s shown any real interest in these problems is UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Security writer: Overdue Justice for Scooter Libby

Judith Miller, the onetime New York Times reporter whose testimony was “crucial” in convicting former vice presidential chief of staff Lewis “Scooter” Libby, says she’s delighted by President Trump’s decision to pardon him. As she recalls at City Journal, Miller testified that she and Libby discussed the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame. Though Libby hadn’t leaked Plame’s name, he was convicted of lying to a grand jury and obstructing justice. But Miller later discovered her testimony “was in error” and that Libby “was the victim of an overzealous prosecutor whose investigation should have ended before it began.” Moreover, that same prosecutor’s assertion that Plame was “a super-secret covert agent” whose name was unknown outside the intelligence community was false. And Plame’s outing, the CIA later admitted, didn’t harm any agents or operations.

Culture critic: New Yorker Attacks ‘Christian Chicken’

Jane Ellis at the Washington Examiner declares herself “honestly astounded” at The New Yorker’s “downright ignorant” attack on what it labels Chick-Fil-A’s “creepy infiltration of New York City.” Especially since it’s abundantly clear that author Dan Piepenbring’s real problem is with the chain’s “pervasive Christian traditionalism” and its owners’ stated purpose “to glorify God.” He denounces the company’s “Spokescows” as secret evangelists. Seriously, she asks, “has anyone ever been converted religiously on the basis of interacting with a Spokescow?” Yet Piepenbring actually is arguing that “a chicken sandwich chain owned by Christians is somehow culturally dangerous enough to warrant exclusion and ostracizing from society.” Which is why, she warns, “this is not a piece to simply laugh off.” This is “the essence of bigotry and intolerance.”

From the right: Trump Takes Petty Comey’s Bait

James Comey’s petty put-downs of President Trump’s hair, tan and hand size make him sound more like “a high-school bully” than a former FBI director, suggests National Review’s Katherine Timpf. In fact, they’re downright “childish” — which is “not a description you should want to apply to you” when you’re also making serious allegations against a president. Indeed, it seems like “he was looking to get a rise out of Trump. Which, of course, he did.” But while going on a tweet-storm was intended to be self-defense, “it would up making Trump look unhinged.” Frankly, the president “would have been better off just leaving it alone” and not giving Comey “the extra attention.”

Defense expert: Yes, Trump Has a Syria Strategy

Critics charge President Trump is conducting military operations in Syria without a strategy — an accusation Kori Schake at The Atlantic dismisses as “inaccurate.” Barack Obama, after all, “had grandiose goals” in Syria but failed to achieve any of them. But while “important similarities” exist in the Obama and Trump strategies, it’s wrong to suggest the current president too is “leading from behind.” His strategy is “to limit American involvement, to push responsibility for outcomes in the region back onto states in the region, and to let power determine outcomes.” In short, “it is not a commitment to change the horrible and predictable outcome of the Syrian civil war; it is narrowly constrained to avoid involving Iran or Russia.” Yet he is “also willing to run risks that Obama never would have.”
