Reagan’s lesson for Trump on Iran and other comments.

Last US News - Opinion: Reagan’s lesson for Trump on Iran and other comments. NY Post 24 - US News

The Washington Post’s David Ignatius, reporting from a regional conference in Abu Dhabi, says he heard “passionate enthusiasm” from prominent Arabs for President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. Indeed, they “love the idea” that Trump “is about to give Iran a punch in the nose.” And while they realize the potential dangers, “many Arab leaders don’t seem to care.” They expect “Tehran will eventually bend to pressure” — provided there’s a united front. Ignatius recalls Ronald Reagan’s presidency and the “once-unthinkable possibility” that America could “dislodge the Soviets” from Eastern Europe and the USSR itself. His suggested course of action: a combination of “combatting regional meddling, plus maintaining arms control.” A full rollback of Iran is possible, “but it requires a sustained effort.” Political scribe: Dems Set for ’18 Win, Trouble in ’20

Division can be a blessing or a curse for a political party — and sometimes both, suggests The Week’s Damon Linker. That’s what Democrats are discovering now: Division will help them in November’s midterms, but the 2020 presidential race “is another matter entirely.” Right now, lack of consensus about the party’s direction allows Dems to “adapt to regional and ideological differences,” fielding unambiguously liberal candidates where that works and moderates where it doesn’t. But that’s rankled the party’s activist base — and the conflict “is bound to boil over in the country as a whole” going into 2020. Indeed, “it could be disastrous for Democratic efforts to make Trump a one-term president.” In the end, the party’s greatest current strength could “become the source of its greatest vulnerability.” Conservative take: Gillibrand’s Empty Gender Rhetoric

New York’s Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is running hard among potential Democratic presidential candidates to produce “clickbaity soundbites — especially of the ‘woke’ variety,” says Dan McLaughlin at National Review. Her latest: “If it wasn’t Lehman Brothers but Lehman Sisters, we might not have had the financial collapse.” It’s not an argument for diversity but a suggestion that “women, just by being women, can run things better.” Which raises the question of why she’s opposed nearly every one of President Trump’s female nominees to positions of power in his administration and to the federal bench. Says McLaughlin: “If she really believes what she said, she’d actually apply it to her own votes.”

From the right: Questions Media Won’t Ask About Gaza

For many in the news media, charges Commentary’s Noah Rothman, “the temptation to surrender to emotion and condemn Israel” for Monday’s deadly violence at the border with Gaza “has been too great to resist.” But their simple narrative overlooks “many of the harder questions” which they don’t bother to ask. Such as the fact that so many of those killed by Israeli gunfire turn out to be Hamas activists, suggesting they’ve been carefully targeted, and aren’t the victims of random shootings by reckless soldiers. Nor has the press noticed that Hamas provided demonstrators with “the quickest routes by which they could infiltrate Israeli communities upon breaching the border.” Frankly, if this is all about Israeli government abuses, “why has the West Bank remained comparatively calm while Gaza has been on the brink for months?” The press has “internalized only half the story in Gaza — Hamas’s half.”

Arts critic: Wolfe Was First and Foremost a Reporter

The late Tom Wolfe’s “sole and only loyalty was to the facts painstakingly gathered by hand and scribbled down in his reporter’s notebook,” observes Terry Teachout in Arts Journal. But it was his genius in middle age to discover that his gift was less for traditional journalism than in “a very particular kind of novelistic fiction, the kind animated by first-hand reportage.” Out of that came “Bonfire of the Vanities,” a book “determined above all things to tell the truth” about New York City in the late ‘80s. Says Teachout: “It was as though the veil of euphemism had been pulled back — no, ripped down — and for the first time I saw New York as it was.” Second to H.L. Mencken, says Teachout, Tom Wolfe “was America’s greatest journalist.”
