Why it’s not worth it to save Miss America.

It’s time to say goodbye to the antiquated flesh parade that was Miss America. Ta-ta, T&A. Last week, the 97-year-old Miss America pageant, an offensively guilty pleasure for millions of TV viewers, was plunged into its death throes. Two of its nearly pornographic rivalries were abruptly axed: Swimsuits, which inspired generations of full-grown females in progressively brief states of undress and major heels to contort their bodies into bare-skinned poses.

Also gone is the evening gown contest, which required hopefuls to do the same inside plunge-necked peekaboo get-ups, creating awkward displays that thrilled and delighted many viewers with bad intent.

Pageant bigs staged an energetic Hail Mary to save this dinosaur, which masquerades as a scholarship pageant. But it has always operated like a kind of mud wrestle, pitting females against one another based on physical appearance.

XXX stars do almost the same thing for a lot more money, without hiding behind a flimsy veneer of respectability.

Desexualizing one of the most sexually exploitative events of the year was a nice try, but it is doomed to failure. It’s time to pull the plug on it now, and let the Miss die with whatever might be left of its dignity.

The road to this weirdly sanitized path began in December. Leaked emails revealed pageant leaders mocking, fat-shaming and slut-shaming women.

The bigwigs insulted the players for perceived sexual promiscuity, and laughed in agreement when a pageant writer referred to former winners as “c—ts,” a vulgarity not deemed misogynistic enough to cost Samantha Bee her TV show. But it was plenty enough to force the Miss America Organization’s CEO, president and board chair to step down in shame, while creating a ripple effect that finally rendered The Miss obsolete.

The only thing shocking about this big reveal of behind-the-scenes sexism and contempt is that anyone should be surprised by the attitudes of officials who’ve been insulting contestants to their faces for a long time.

In January, Gretchen Carlson, a former Fox News Channel hostess, herself crowned Miss America in 1989, was named the org’s chairwoman.

And suddenly, the retro contest was to be about the contents of contestants’ characters, not of their bras.

Well, who wouldn’t want her soul’s insides bared competitively?

Now, women are to wear whatever they want (sweatpants?) while participating in such fare as talent shows and interviews with the judges, and be graded not by their body parts, but by their abilities, wit and brains. But for an event conceived in 1921 in Atlantic City, N.J., in which the outward forms of childless, never-married, females between the ages of 17 and 25 were lined up and compared, it seems that removing the lipstick from this pig is doomed to failure.

The question remains: Why do we need a contest that divides people of a single gender at all? We’ve already got numerous TV talent competitions. College or university scholarships may be won by women not compelled to strip — even if it’s just their souls — on live television.

Miss America exists for fetishists, many of them female, who enjoy the sad spectacle of feminine appeal that played out annually on their TVs. Now that it’s gone, I don’t buy Miss America 2.0.
