FDA takes easy way out on vaping and other comments.

Conservative: The Forgotten Foreign Election Meddling Two decades ago, recalls Byron York at the Washington Examiner, a hostile foreign power blatantly meddled in a US presidential election. Evidence suggested the preferred candidate either “was complicit in the meddling, or at least looked the other way while it was going on.” As president, he “fiercely resisted...

From the right: Feds Take Lazy Way Out on Vaping The Food and Drug Administration has “declared war” on vaping — what National Review’s Kevin Williamson calls “the most popular smoking-cessation tool on the market.” The FDA’s order that manufacturers submit plans to keep their product out of the hands of minors or see it taken off the market “calls to mind the “predictably lazy federal approach to firearms regulation: Rather than do the hard work of running down street dealers and straw buyers,” target gunmakers and dealers instead. Yet “there is a laborious but straightforward way to go about dealing with those who sell vaping products to minors.” Namely, “investigate, arrest, charge, fine, repeat — and, if necessary, jail major offenders.” Who’s the winner of a broader war on vaping? Well, “shares in tobacco titan Altria jumped almost 7 percent” on the FDA news.

Foreign desk: Mideast Peacemaking Inflamed the Conflict There’s “a tragic irony in the history-making vibe” that marked the signing a quarter-century ago this week of the Oslo Accords between Israel and the PLO, notes Elan Journo at The Hill. People fervently believed that it was a real “victory for peace.” But Oslo’s real legacy was “worse conflict”: In the following years, “Palestinian suicide bombers struck buses, coffee shops, pizzerias, discotheques” in Israel, which also had to fight two major wars against Hamas. Why? Because “fundamentally, the peace process was bankrupt,” reflecting the notion that “you can bargain with anyone,” no matter what “your adversary’s moral character,” despite the Palestinian Authority being Yasser Arafat’s “dictatorship.” Oslo did usher in “a new era in the Middle East,” but one “that only dictators and jihadists have reason to celebrate.”

Security desk: Al Qaeda Is Alive — and Misunderstood The fact that al Qaeda has been unable to carry out another 9/11-style attack inside the US “shouldn’t obscure the reality” about the group and its “global jihad,” warns Thomas Joscelyn at The Weekly Standard. It “remains a threat” and its “operatives are fighting in more countries around the world today than was the case on 9/11.” Al Qaeda’s war on America, in other words, “is far from over.” With its Iran-based network as the “core pipeline” feeding money and manpower across the Middle East, al Qaeda is “attempting to build its own caliphate” by placing “most of its resources in various insurgencies and wars.” Yet while its leaders have “deprioritized” mass-casualty attacks in the West, “that could change at any time.”

Culture critic: DeVos Is Right About Sex Assault Rules President Trump may not be in any moral position to revamp the rules governing sexual assaults on college campuses. But Shikha Dalmia at The Week says those rules, imposed by President Barack Obama, “were so overzealous and draconian that civil libertarians who care about the rights of the accused should welcome Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ proposed reforms.” Obama’s rules, for example, “inflated coercive sex to include anything a partner didn’t like” and “eviscerated due process requirements.” As a result, “hundreds of hapless young men have been wrongfully convicted — simply because their partners subsequently regretted the encounter.” DeVos “might be a flawed messenger for the excesses of Title IX, given the morally compromised leader she represents. But liberals are morally compromising themselves by ignoring her message.” —Compiled by Eric Fettmann
