A strong offseason with additions on offense and defense has arguably placed NYCFC at the top of MLS’ best offseason discussion but as the past has shown, the team does, in fact, take the draft serious and use its players in the squad.

NYCFC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna wouldn’t exactly reveal the team’s plans for Friday’s SuperDraft, however, he told MLSSoccer.com that NYCFC would be more inclined to target a midfield or defensive player since offseason transfers like Designated Player signing Jesus Medina and Ismael Tajouri added more artillery on the offense side.

Whether the team sticks to that plan remains to be seen. In three drafts, NYCFC has poached offensive player in the first round, first with Khiry Shelton back in 2015 before trading up to snag Jack Harrison in 2016 and Jonathan Lewis and Kwame Awuah in 2017. But all those picks, except Awuah, were all within the top three in each of those drafts and this time around, NYCFC is slotted to pick No. 19, unless they trade up like its done the last two seasons.

If NYCFC decide to stand pat and remain at No. 19, here are five players that Top Drawer Soccer‘s Travis Clark highlighted as being potentially available when NYCFC pick 19th in Friday’s SuperDraft (11 am; MLS).

1. Mark Segbers, Midfielder, Wisconsin

Hailing from the prized St. Louis Scott Gallagher youth system, Segbers started his career at Wisconsin as a forward but dropped into a more midfield role who potentially could move to outside back. He scored five goals and tallied seven assists in his senior season and in Patrick Vieira’s 4-4-3 formation, Segbers, if properly groomed, possibly could be a cheap, American threat on the outside.

2. Brandon Bye, Defender, Western Michigan

Clark noted that Bye will be a project, but he’s one of the most athletic and fittest players in the draft. At the MLS Combine, Bye was the only player to finish in the top 10 in the speed, agility and power tests but questions remain about the defensive end to the left back’s game which could cause him to fall out of the first round. If selected, he wouldn’t an option in NYCFC’s current plans but would benefit from a loan stint with a USL club.

3. Lucas Stauffer, Defender, Creighton

At 5-foot-6, Stauffer is a very good outside back with a high soccer IQ. Versatility is his calling card, with Clark saying Stauffer can play either left or right back. Though Stauffer isn’t expected to fall to NYCFC (he had one of the best combines), he offers an intriguing versatile option for Vieira playing wide in the 4-4-3 formation or as one of the three at the back if NYCFC opt for more attacking options. If he’s available at No. 19, he should be considered, according to Clark.

4. Rafael Andrade Santos, Midfielder, VCU

Because of NYCFC’s replenished attack, Andrade Santos would be another depth addition but a quality attacking player who could be a backup No. 10 who is left-footed and plays out wide on the wing. But the Brazilian would require an international slot which could shy teams away from using a slot on an unproven talent. NYCFC currently are one off their international limit, carrying 10 international players in nine slots.

5. Arthur Bosua, Forward, Columbia University

The two-time Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year shined at Columbia University, tallying 12 goals and five assists in 18 games this season. For a team that has struggled to find a suitable attacking backup behind David Villa, Bosua offers intriguing size (6-foot-4) and a scoring prowess that could eat late minutes in the attack for NYCFC. He also has ties to NYCFC playing for the Long Island Rough Riders, the club’s PDL affiliate
