Callaway’s intimate meeting with ones who’ll make or break Mets.

Because of space limitations in the minor-league clubhouse of the Mets’ spring-training complex, meetings are often held in the weight room at the start of camp. Now, as major league players on the opposite side of the complex, pitchers and catchers gathered in the weight room at First Data Field on Wednesday to receive instructions from new manager Mickey Callaway and pitching coach Dave Eiland before the first spring workout.

If nothing else, the weight room provided an intimate setting.

“It was more just a general talk as a pitching staff,” Seth Lugo said. “What to expect, what we are working toward.”

The 42-year-old Callaway, who is running a spring camp for the first time in his major league career — his previous experience came as Indians pitching coach for five seasons — called the session a discussion about “routines” and “processes.” Among them, ensuring each pitcher understands how many bullpen and live batting practice sessions he must throw before getting to pitch in the Grapefruit League.

Callaway will convene his entire team for a meeting Monday that will precede the initial full-squad workout.

“It will be a little different,” Callaway said. “We are going to get more in depth about the things we want to see out of our team and the expectations that we have, so I am really excited about that meeting. It’s my chance to address everybody in the organization basically and for guys to get a chance to see everybody in the organization and not just the guys on the field.”

Callaway’s message to the group will be that everybody in the organization — including the staff interns — matters in keeping the team functional.

“They become an integral part of what we’re trying to do and they help us in our routines and processes,” Callaway said. “So [players] have got to make sure they are on top of their games because there’s a lot of responsibilities throughout the day and it’s not always about come here, do your prep work and go out on the field and perform.”

Jacob deGrom was asked if he expects Callaway to run a tight ship.

The fact Callaway has such a deep pitching background is something Lugo already has come to appreciate. The right-hander mentioned a recent bullpen session Callaway was watching that turned into an instructional moment.

“He wanted to talk about my curveball and pitching and putting some ideas in my head,” Lugo said. “It’s nice coming from three different angles: pitching coach, bullpen coach, manager. I think it’s going to be positive for everybody.”

But Callaway is quick to point out that any instruction he provides to pitchers will be coordinated with Eiland to ensure both are sending the same message.

“[Callaway] and Dave have a lot of knowledge, so Mickey told us if we have a question for him we can ask him, but Dave is going to know about it,” Zack Wheeler said. “They are working together. I think they both accept each other and work well.”

Wheeler, Lugo, Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey and Steven Matz are among the pitchers who missed significant action because of injuries last season, but Eiland said nobody is holding back in workouts as camp begins.

“There are no red flags so to speak right now,” Eiland said. “But this is baseball. There’s some guys that are going to have to be held back as we go and hopefully it won’t be anything major. We have to be careful and err on the side of caution early, but we also have to get these guys ready for March 29.”
