Mets get back a key reliever who passes his first test.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — It was just 10 pitches, but it was a “great” day for Mets reliever Anthony Swarzak. “It felt great. It felt great to compete. It felt great to be in a Mets uniform out there and facing some hitters in front of some fans,” said Swarzak, who worked a 1-2-3...

“It felt great. It felt great to compete. It felt great to be in a Mets uniform out there and facing some hitters in front of some fans,” said Swarzak, who worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning in the Mets’ 9-7 win over the Nationals, his first appearance since Feb. 27 because of a strained right calf.

“It’s good to have him back out there. He’s looked great in his sim games. It’s good to have him on the actual mound knowing he has to go cover first,” said manager Mickey Callaway, who added there are no restrictions on Swarzak and that he “absolutely” expects the right-hander to be ready for Opening Day. “He looked great.”

There’s that word again.

Swarzak, who figures to be a key late-inning bullpen component after signing for two years and $14 million, hopes to get in as many innings as possible before the Mets head north. He said he could have gone longer Saturday and expressed no doubt he could pitch in back-to-back scenarios.

Left-handed starter Jason Vargas received a follow-up CT scan Saturday on his glove hand (the results were not made available), after he was struck by a line drive a day earlier. An X-ray on his right hand on Friday was negative. Vargas plans to consult with a specialist Sunday to hear different options, but said he is not concerned about the situation.

Mets starter A.J. Griffin lasted 1 ¹/₃ innings — surrendering two runs and five hits, including a solo homer to Chris Dominguez and a double to former Met Matt Reynolds.

Dominic Smith still has enough discomfort in his right quadriceps to prevent him from running. The first baseman, who hasn’t appeared in a game since the Grapefruit League opener last month, said he hopes a return to the lineup is possible before the Mets break camp March 26.

Smith’s absence from action essentially has handed the starting first base job to veteran Adrian Gonzalez, who was the front-runner for the position as camp started.

Callaway said he liked what he saw in 2 ²/₃ innings from Rafael Montero, despite the righty yielding a solo homer to Adam Eaton.

Zack Wheeler is scheduled to start a minor league game Monday.

Hansel Robles got the victory in the Mets’ 9-7 win over the Nationals despite surrendering a three-run homer in the seventh, his second inning of work. He did strike out four overall.

In the second inning, the Mets scored three runs with two hits. One run scored on a wild pitch and after three walks, two scored on a throwing error. Jay Bruce doubled for an apparent RBI, but Luis Guillorme ran a stop sign and was out for contact with third base coach Glenn Sherlock.

Jay Bruce, noted speedster, foiled the Nationals’ shift in the first inning by bunting down third for a single.

Noah Syndergaard is scheduled to start against the Orioles and Dylan Bundy in Sarasota, Fla.
