These traded-away Yankees have been huge busts.

Gleyber Torres could be promoted as early as Wednesday without accumulating a year’s service time this season, thus, allowing the Yankees to get basically seven seasons of service out of him rather than six before free agency. He is a candidate to soon play third base because even with better signs of late from Miguel Andujar, Yankees third basemen rank third worst in how Fangraphs computes Wins Above Replacement, which attempts to provide an overall stat for hitting, fielding and baserunning.

But for the Yankees, it possibly could be worse — they could still have Chase Headley. With the Padres, Headley had opened the season with one hit in 26 at-bats and 13 strikeouts. The hot-hitting rookie Christian Villanueva (five homers) already has taken third base from Headley.

To get rid of the $13 million Headley was owed in 2018, the Yankees paired him with Bryan Mitchell in an offseason trade to San Diego for non-prospect Jabari Blash. Mitchell’s inability to throw strikes followed him west — he has 14 walks against three strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings over three starts (5.27 ERA).

Lots of free baseball

Through the weekend, 25 of the 221 overall games had gone to extra innings. That is 11.31 percent of games and, if that were to hold, it would be the largest percent since 11.33 in 1960.

Perhaps it is just an anomaly and the percentage will drop into the more common 7 or 8 percent range. But one scout offered a theory on why there have been so many extra-inning games early and why he thinks it will not change, and it has to do with roster construction.

With all teams going to at least 12-man pitching staffs and many times 13, the scout explained, you are dealing with shorter benches than ever and, thus, fewer late-game hitting options. Plus, the volume of pitching means that no specific reliever is being left out for an extended period until desperation sets in.

“So far you have had a lot of three-man benches, in cold weather, facing one hard-throwing reliever after another, it is just hard to score,” the scout said.

I will add to it that as much as folks hate how multiple pitching changes destroys pace of play, it also suffocates offense. The .681 OPS by hitters vs. relievers this year is the lowest since six-division play began in 1994, a .231 batting average would be the lowest by 11 points and strikeouts are at an all-time high (9.2 per nine innings). It is hard to score runs against relievers and, thus, tie games have a greater chance to stay tied for a while.
