If things weren’t going bad enough, a huge chunk of ice flew off one of the Royals’ team buses and slammed into the windshield of the other last night. The shards hit the bus driver and reliever Blaine Boyer had to grab the wheel. The driver was OK. pic.twitter.com/b1kdSxqDQG

Driving through Toronto on Sunday night, after their home game against the Angels was postponed due to cold weather, the Royals braved more dangerous conditions when a sheet of ice fell off one team bus and hit the windshield of the one behind it. Relief pitcher Blaine Boyer jumped up to grab the wheel after shards of glass scattered and cut up the driver’s face, The Athletic reported.

Boyer refused to take credit for his teammates’ safety, however, instead heaping praise on the driver, Fred, who was uninjured despite the cuts.

“He was a stud. … That guy Fred was a trooper,” Boyer told reporters on Monday. “He had shards in his face, and he was locked in on trying to get the bus slowed down.”

The Royals couldn’t get away from the Toronto ice storm, which did most of its damage over the weekend but caused power outages and transit delays into Monday. An ice-induced hole in the roof over Rogers Centre allowed water to fall onto the outfield grass and forced the Blue Jays to cancel the series opener.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday before closing the series the next day.

Coincidentally, the last time the Blue Jays canceled a game due to roof damage was in April 2001 against the Royals.
