Young bloomers are defying Yankees’ usual path.

WASHINGTON — It wasn’t too long ago when the Yankees made it easy to despise them — assuming you didn’t revere them — because of the unabashed way they would throw around a checkbook. Payroll? Let other teams and other markets worry about payroll. They would bury you in greenbacks. Two hundred million here. One-fifty...

They would bury you in greenbacks.

Two hundred million here. One-fifty there. Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow there will be no salary cap.

There is still residue of those Gordon Gekko ways on the roster. Jacoby Ellsbury, for instance, is still a member of the Yankees, though if he were any more ghostly he would inhabit Demi Moore’s dreams. CC Sabathia is still on the roster, though he’s earning far less than his $25 million heyday payday. And, yes, Giancarlo Stanton is baseball’s highest-paid player, but he was acquired in a trade — with the Marlins footing part of the bill.

No, the Yankees have re-established themselves as baseball’s bullies — and, as of Wednesday, as Las Vegas’ new odds-on World Series favorites — by traveling the most amazing and most improbable road to baseball success: by relying on young players, by making youth their core, and by drawing to 21 on almost every one of them.

Luis Severino.

Gary Sanchez.

Aaron Judge.

Jordan Montgomery.

And that’s with the jury still out on Greg Bird (who has shown he can be as dangerous as any of the others when he’s healthy), and with fan favorite Clint Frazier still poking around, trying to find his place on the varsity (though he’s already shown a penchant for the dramatic) and with Dellin Betances hinting at re-establishing himself as a frightening presence out of the bullpen (for opponents this time, not the Yankees), and with Tyler Austin, who was responsible for all three runs in helping the Yankees salvage the 3-3 tie Tuesday, a suspended game that will now be completed on June 18 thanks to the rain that washed out Wednesday’s games.

You look up and down baseball and you simply don’t see a track record like that. Heck, just look across town, where the Mets have waited seven years for Brandon Nimmo to become a contributing player, where Michael Conforto is scuffling, where Amed Rosario is fighting to keep his head above water, where Dom Smith is forever battling to keep his waistline in check. Yes, they hit on Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard and Jeurys Familia. That’s still nowhere near the hit rate of this latest batch of Yankees stars.

In truth, while it’s easy (and correct) to liken what the Yankees are doing now to what they did in the early ’90s when they assembled, developed and ultimately enjoyed the fruits of Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada, in some ways it’s even more impressive than that. Because there were two can’t-miss, won’t-miss cores of that generation — Brien Taylor and Ruben Rivera — who never even made an echo in their time here.

Greg Bird watches his solo homer leave the park in Game 3 of the 2017 ALDS.Paul J. Bereswill

“What impresses me about our young guys is that they don’t press, they feel like they belong and so they play like they belong,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone says. “For me, it’s kind of fun to see them progress the way they have.”

It’s fun for Yankees fans, too, and promises to become even more enjoyable for them when Bird returns (remember, he had probably the single-biggest moment of last year’s postseason run, the homer off Andrew Miller in Game 3 of the ALDS) and when Montgomery returns and when they figure out a way to get Frazier at-bats.

Of course, what they already have is fun enough. Severino is on a collision course with the Cy Young Award. Judge, the MVP runner-up a year ago, seems intent on staying in that conversation. There isn’t a player pitchers want to see at the plate less in late-and-close situations than Sanchez. Torres looks like a star already.

Nobody is supposed to hit that many 21s.
