Yankees find a way to take care of business without their best.

The Yankees beat another sub .500 team on Saturday, downing the Blue Jays, 11-6, but on a day the team celebrated the record-setting 1998 squad, it was hardly a test to see if they are ready to conquer October. After racing to an eight-run lead after five innings, they saw ace Luis Severino get knocked...

After racing to an eight-run lead after five innings, they saw ace Luis Severino get knocked out without recording an out in the sixth, a shaky early performance by the bullpen and continued issues with Greg Bird at first and Neil Walker in right.

To make matters worse, Austin Romine left the game in the fifth after getting drilled in the mask by a foul ball.

Still, Bird managed to homer for the first time since July 28, and the Yankees were able to hit some bad Toronto pitching hard enough to build what proved to be an insurmountable lead.

Didi Gregorius, Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Andujar homered off right-hander Sean Reid-Foley, and Zach Britton, who has mostly disappointed since coming in a trade from Baltimore last month, stifled the Toronto comeback with a scoreless seventh inning after the Blue Jays scored five runs in the sixth.

There were also some promising signs from Severino, who was coming off six bad outings in a row.

Severino entered Saturday having given up seven first-inning runs in his previous three starts (two apiece against the Mets and the White Sox and three versus the Red Sox in Boston).

On Saturday, Severino allowed just a two-out single to Curtis Granderson in the opening frame.

The Yankees quickly gave the right-hander a lead to work with, as Brett Gardner led off with a walk. He stole second before Gregorius hit a two-run homer.

They added to their advantage in the second, sparked by a Gleyber Torres single to left. Bird’s woes continued with another strikeout, but Torres advanced to second on a wild pitch then moved to third when catcher Danny Jansen threw the ball into center.

After Walker walked, Romine delivered a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.

Torres reached on an error by second baseman Devon Travis to put runners on the corners for Bird, who grounded to second to score Andujar.

Stanton’s 32nd homer in the fourth increased the lead to 7-0. An Andujar homer in the fifth made it 8-0, as the Yankees scored in each of the first five innings.

Severino found trouble in the fifth. A pitch away from loading the bases with one out, he instead struck out ex-Yankee Billy McKinney looking before getting Travis to ground out.

His day ended in the sixth, as Granderson led off with a double and got to third on an error by Gardner in left. Justin Smoak’s single to right produced Toronto’s first run, and Severino was pulled for Tommy Kahnle.

Kahnle’s fiasco of a season continued and he failed to finish the inning. He allowed two hits and a walk — while recording just two outs — and left the bases loaded for Jonathan Holder.

McKinney — traded by the Yankees to Toronto in the Brandon Drury-J.A. Happ deal — singled to right, where Walker misplayed it, allowing three runs to score. McKinney was thrown out at third when the rookie slid off the bag, but the Yankees’ lead was cut to three.
